  • Seeking Ontario Psychiatrist

Posted by Dr. Kyrsten Grimes on July 29, 2022 at 12:02 pm

    Hi there,

I’m wondering if anyone knows a psychiatrist in Ontario who sees patients privately, even if just for initial stabilization and dose optimization (at which point the fanily doctor could take over)… preferably one without a lengthy waitlist…

    Thanks!

Hi. Unfortunately, this is like looking for a needle in a haystack. Does the clients GP have any contacts because, as you likely know, the referral needs to come from a medical doctor anyway. I typically suggest that, as tedious a process as it is, that the client go through emergency if the symptoms are severe so that they can get to see a psychiatric resident and then hopefully be in the system with a referral internally.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, my client has exhausted their options, and the ER isn’t a possibility for them.

The fastest option may be a provider on PsychotherapyMatters or to sign up as a provider yourself. I’ve just done so since I’m having a really hard time getting my clients set up with a psychiatrist. Waitlist on PsychotherapyMatters is something like 4-6 weeks for a psychiatrist consult, much reduced compared to standard means.

I was considering becoming a member of Psychotherapy Matters. How has your experience been with them so far? I came across it online, so I only know what is on the website.

I don’t have experience with them yet as I just signed up for the platform. I think it’s a neat concept and definitely aids in getting linked with a psychiatrist faster so I’m hoping it will be useful in my practice!

I used to be a member of Psychotherapy Matters and it was helpful in regards to getting a consult but the platform they used for the consult was quite gitchy. Did either of you join and try it out yet?
